Tess of the D’Urbervilles (2012)

Adapted by Gerry Flanagan

14th – 26th August 2012

Tess of the D'urbervilles

"Thus, the thing began… why was she doomed to be seen and coveted that day by the wrong man, and not by some other man, the right and desired one..."

Tess of the D'UrberVilles is an age-old tale of the maid who goes to the greenwood and returns a maiden no more. The story is an indictment of all the crimes and hypocrisies of ninteenth- century England.

The story comments on a pharisaic religion, cruel class- system, the destruction of its traditional agriculture and the perversions of the 'modern' consiousness. It is an allegory of the pitiful plight of humanity in a cosmos which has no use for it's desires and feelings.

With universal range, this most tragic of story is lightened by a delightful and clear eyed humour.

One of the greatest romantic tragedies of all time, this version will harness all of Gerry Flanagan's extraordinary theatrical powers to create a dynamic, inventive and terrifying descent towards Tess's final excecution.

Gerry Flanagan has created a diverse and spectacular range of shows with YMT including; Great Expectations (2008), Fools Gold (2009), Scheherazade (2010) and Love and madness (2011).
