Project Cuba (2012)
By Linda Walton
4th – 16th August 2012
This musical is based the true story of Cuchito Castro who forms an all-girl band with her sisters to escape both her father’s and society’s expectations for her life. Set in Cuba in the 1930s and spanning three decades, Cuchito and her sisters break every conventional barrier to perform in the open air cafes in Havana, to play as invited guests throughout South America and, the ultimate, to appear in Europe. Follow their fortunes as the girls become one of the most famous Latin bands of the era – until the revolution and the arrival of Fidel Castro.
Rejecting many opportunities for love, her single-mindedness eventually leads to the breakdown of the band and her reluctant return to Cuba. Ultimately she discovers that the freedom she is searching for comes, not from her adventures abroad, but from using the talent she was born with - bringing happiness to other people through her music.
YMT are looking not just for actors, but for some incredible musicians to help devise and create this new piece of work.
