Get involved
There are so many ways for you as a young person, a parent, a teacher or a supporter to get involved with YMT. Here's a few suggestions...
If you are aged 11-21 there are two main ways of joining YMT:
- If you don't want to audition and you want to improve your skills or want to try out music theatre for the first time, then you can join Summer Skills, our music theatre summer camp. These are residential courses taking place taking place in universities or boarding schools in cities around the UK every summer. Lots of young people find that a Summer Skills course is an ideal way to learn how YMT works and prepare for the following year's audition.
- Alternatively, you can audition around the UK in January and February for Productions taking place in the following summer holidays. From these Auditions the highest scoring young people are allocated into one of 6-8 productions according to the requirements of the show. Auditions are pretty laid back with young people being seen in groups of up to 30. Instrumental musicians and Backstage workers are also recruited through this process.
If you are a budding writer or composer aged 16-21 you can also join our Young Writers and Composers course which takes place at Easter in a residential centre in Cumbria, close to the Yorkshire Dales.
Our Music Theatre for All courses are local and only take place when funding is available. We are currently planning MTAs (as they are known) in Middlesbrough, Hastings and the London Boroughs of Wandsworth, Southwark and Hownslow. The age range is generally mid teens and most of the young people are drawn from specific schools or community groups in a the locality.
If you are already at, or recently graduated from, drama school, conservatoire or another higher education institution then you can apply to our YMT Creative Trainee Scheme which offers places to Assistant Directors, Assistant Musical Directors, Designers and Assistant Choreographers. We have regular applicants from students at university, music schools such as Guildhall, drama schools such as Rose Bruford, design departments like Wimbledon School of Art and dance schools such as Laban. These opportunities are for students of the performing arts who are aiming to work professionally in the creative industries or in related educational professions.
For music leaders (which includes teachers of music and drama, amateur theatre leaders, youth arts leaders, music students and graduates) we offer a superb 3 day vocal coaching programme designed by Lin Marsh and Christopher Breckenridge called Voice Works.
For budding arts administrators in London we can offer Internships which cover a wide range of skillsets including producing, marketing and general arts administration.
We welcome support from parents in any of a hundred ways and will be putting up a special page about this in the near future.
Finally, and so importantly, if you can support us financially or support our fundraising effort with time, money or contacts then we would love to hear from you.
