Music Theatre for All - Fife 09
Following 2008’s successful MTA project in
The project involved young people from the same three high schools Beath, Inverkeithing and Lochgelly and they again worked with a professional director, music director and choreographer towards a performance in front of 250 people in the Lochgelly Centre.
The young people worked with Eddie Latter, Director, Mark Aspinall, Music Director and Choreographer, Lynn Brown. 125 young people took part in the two days of workshops in schools 35 of whom participated at half-term.
This project focused on devising and improvising using drama, music and dance to create a piece of new music theatre on a theme of safety. The young people were integral to this process and we liaised with the teachers prior to starting the project so that they were confident that we would create appropriate and pertinent material in a safe way.
During the workshop period, the artistic team encouraged the young people to contribute lyrics, melodies and experiences to create songs, dialogue and movement and all three schools wrote at least one original song which was incorporated into the final performance. The use of these techniques in the project ensured that the young people had significant levels of ownership in the final show - a morality tale for our time, The Tale of Loch Beathing.
One of the most important benefits continues to be how much the young people gain from meeting and working with other young people from different schools in the area – even the title of the piece reflected the cooperative way the young people worked together.
