Here are the headline details of our main summer shows for 2011
YMT is proud to announce its best-ever season of summer productions. Around 300 young people (actors, singers, musicians and technical staff) will be working with some of the UKs best creative practitioners to put together seven exciting new productions across the UK. The headlines:
- Tales from the World's End is new project for Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Directed by Kath Burlinson with composers Mairi Campbell and David Francis, it will explore the deep roots of story-telling though music, a challenging and stretching opportunity for the performers.
- We’re delighted that Terry Pratchett has agreed to us restaging Mort, a musical version of his best-selling novel (which we first showed at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford in 2008) and a wonderful piece of theatre, responding brilliantly to the challenge of presenting the unique Discworld on stage...
- Love and Madness takes us into the world of the Commedia dell’Arte to meet the wonderfully comical and tragic characters that first emerged in late 15th century Italy.
- Jabberwocky goes to still another place - nonsense verse and words in poetry and drama, from Lewis Carroll to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Asking why nonsense excites such fascination, the show will develop it's own new nonsense...
- by contrast, Korczak, written and directed by Nick Stimson, tells the moving and inspring tale of the astonishing life and death of Janusz Korczak in the Warsaw ghetto during the Second World War.
- and we're thrilled that James Bourne and Elliot Davis are developing another new piece for YMT: Out There ...a new lunar musical... following the huge success of Loserville the Musical (opening next year in London's West End)
- For several years we've wanted to create a music theatre piece based on Shakespeare's Macbeth and now the time has come as we get this major new project under way.
